Surgical Procedures

General surgery is a specialty that encompasses a wide range of illnesses centered primarily around the abdomen, which include but are not limited to the following surgical procedures:

The VNUS Closure Procedure
A solution to let pain and varicose veins.
Pre-treatment Leg
Post Closure Leg

The Closure procedure is performed on an outpatient basis. Using ultrasound, your physician will position the Closure catheter into the diseased vein through a small opening in the skin. The tiny catheter powered by radio-frequency(RF) energy delivers heat to the vein wall. As the thermal energy is delivered, the vein wall shrinks and the vein is sealed closed. Once the diseased vein is closed, blood is re-routed to other healthy veins.

Following the procedure, a simple bandage is placed over the insertion site, and additional compression may be provided to aid healing. Your doctor may encourage you to walk, and to refrain from extended standing and strenuous activities for a period of time.

People who undergo the Closure procedure typically resume normal activities within a day.

Anal / Rectal Surgery
Appendectomy

Appendicitis is an infection of the appendix that results in severe pain in the right side of your abdomen. Appendicitis usually requires surgical intervention. This may be done via a laparoscopic approach or an open incision. The normal recovery period is approximately 2-3 weeks, but may vary depending on each individual case.

Breast Biopsy

Breast biopsies are performed when an abnormality in the breast is found. You or your doctor may have felt this as a lump, or it may have been detected on a mammogram or ultrasound. Regardless of how the abnormality was found, breast biopsy is often needed to determine the cause of your breast problem. With our new ultrasound mammotome equipment virtually all breast biopsies can be done in our office with microsurgery. This negates the need for a painful incision and a trip to the hospital. Treatment may vary dependent on the abnormality found. Common treatments are either an excisional biopsy or a directional needle core biopsy or mammotome breast biopsy. Recovery is usually just a few days before you can resume normal activities.

Cholecystectomy (Gallbladder surgery)

Gallbladder disease may cause a variety of symptoms including severe stomach pain, shoulder pain, back pain, heartburn, or an upset stomach. The gallbladder may be removed due to gallstones or a nonfunctioning gallbladder. This procedure is most often performed with a laparoscopic approach, but may also be done with an open incision. The recovery period is approximately 2-3 weeks, but may vary depending on each individual case.

Colorectal Surgery

During colorectal surgery, the affected parts of the colon or rectum are surgically removed. Treatment varies depending on which disease process is taking place. For more information, please contact our office to schedule an appointment.

Hemorrhoidectomy

Hemorrhoid tissues are a network of blood vessels located in and around the last few inches of the rectum. When these veins swell, you may develop symptoms such as pain, bleeding during bowel movements, protrusion of tissue from the anus, or itching around the anus. Hemorrhoids are most often caused by too much pressure on the anal canal. Treatment of hemorrhoids depends on the severity of the symptoms. This can vary from a simple change in diet and medical therapy to surgical intervention. New techniques in the treatment of hemorrhoids has dramatically reduced the amount of time in the typical recovery period.

Hernia Repair

A hernia is a weakness or tear in the wall of the abdomen. Hernias can be caused by wear and tear over the years, or may be the result of a weakness in the abdominal wall that is present at birth. Hernias are usually repaired as a one day surgical procedure, meaning you would go home the same day as surgery. Most patients usually have 2-3 weeks off work for recovery.

Nissen Fundoplication

Nissen fundoplication is a surgical procedure used in attempt to control chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) when medications and lifestyle changes have failed. Symptoms of GERD can include severe heartburn, belching, and pain in the upper abdomen or chest. Prior to surgery endoscopy and manometry studies will need to be performed. These tests assist in determining whether a laparoscopic or open surgical approach would be most successful. If you are having these symptoms, please schedule an appointment for a comprehensive health evaluation.

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

Bariatric surgery alters the digestive system to help patients achieve a healthier weight. This surgery is not for everyone. Patients need to have a BMI (body mass index) of 40 or more, or a BMI of 35 or more plus a serious health problem. For this surgery to work, however, patients must be willing to change their diet and lifestyle for the rest of their lives. For more information, please contact our office to schedule an appointment for a comprehensive health evaluation.
